Introducing the Movement practice of ContactImprovBKK to the Bangkok Movement Collective.
Usually when we think of body fitness, we think mainly of the kinetic-mechanical aspect. As if the mind is the master, and our body and our movement is only to serve us, to make us go on doing things and succeeding in life.
But the body is not just that…it’s more. In this class, we would like to bring your attention to include the “nervous, sensorial, perceptual” system to discover the intuitive intelligence of the body in motion, which is at the core of our practice called “contact improvisation.” Our muscles move from the nerves and if we realize that then there is so much more to and through movement. Knowing your body’s state of being and how it makes contact with the environment is about your wellness and society’s wellness. All of this is possible through the simple process of “listening.”
The structure of the class: We will warm up with Qigong-based breath exercise to discover our energetic body…then with this breathful support, we explore the perceptual body to develop finely-tuned sensory-motor skills necessary for movement learning. And we then develop it into movement imagination games. We will frequently use the idea of partnered group play and interaction to investigate movement. Our social animal nature can help us learn together! Along the way, I hope you may notice your body’s own approach towards “dynamic alignment.” Also I hope that through the practice, you will become more perceptive to the minds of the different body systems, like how the anatomical parts (the flesh, the bones and the skins for example) come together independently but also holistically, in what a democratic process! We’d like to propose that the bodily experience of presence can lead you to a better health, a conscious and choiceful lifestyle.
About the facilitator Nitipat Ong Pholchai
Ong is a physicist and science educator, movement researcher, kendoist, capoerista, contemporary dance artist and choreographer. Most of his movement and dance training was from San Francisco where he did a graduate study in Applied Physics and danced professionally. Somatics (Feldenkrais, Body-Mind Centering and contemporary dance), contact improvisation and internal martial arts were among the most influential to him as a mover. He runs and develops his artistic work (movement/dance research) through the local Bangkok group “Spine Party Movement” with its educational branch “Contact Improvisation in BKK” that promotes knowledge about movement and somatic education to public.
The Bangkok Moement Collective is a group of movement specialist in the greater Bangkok area dedicated to bringing the community quality instruction in a number of disciplines.
